“If you act like an ass, you’ll be treated like an ass.”
I first heard those words probably 12 years ago – as a new mom – from my mother-in-law.
They’re likely the most influential and impactful words I’ve ever heard.
Because, we get what we tolerate, and we teach people how to treat us.
That was the message.
At the time, I was nursing my firstborn, spending the day mostly topless because I was nursing so much and so tired, that I couldn’t remember where I left my shirt the last time he ate.
I was insisting on doing most things myself and couldn’t let go of any of the control, because I had to prove I was a good mom.
I went days without showering or brushing my teeth.
I was fully neglecting myself.
And her words?
And, from the deepest place in her heart.
My mother-in-law had no idea so long ago that her words would be the ruler by which I measured my actions each day.
And, they apply to you too.
What behavior are you tolerating in your life?
Are you showing people via your own actions that you are a beautiful gift?
Are you showing YOU what a gift you are?
Do you allow people to take advantage of you, or do you have your stake
planted solidly in the ground for how people will treat you?
Our lives are a collective of those around us that we teach – just like we do our own children – what’s acceptable to us.
Do you take care of yourself and give yourself love, or are you the last to get whatever crumbs of time, love, or energy that you have left at the end of every day?
Do you take time out for you, or just hope that you have a little left over at the end of the day to read, or pamper yourself, or hell… sit in silence for 10 minutes?
You are teaching everyone else how to treat you based on how you’re treating yourself.
You are the teacher.
What will you choose for today’s lesson?
